Food Security Drives Al-Fadhli’s Return to Almarai and NADEC Boards

In a move highlighting the growing priority of food security in Saudi Arabia’s economic strategy, Almarai and NADEC appointed Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture Abdulrahman Al-Fadhli as a non-executive board member, a step widely seen as strengthening alignment between government policy and major food companies.

The appointment gains significance as SALIC, the Public Investment Fund’s agrifood arm, holds strategic stakes in both companies, reinforcing food security as a key link between policymakers and corporate operators.

Al-Fadhli brings extensive industry experience, having started his career at Almarai and served as its CEO for 15 years before joining the government in 2015.

In his ministerial role, he also chaired SALIC and the Agricultural Development Fund, two pillars supporting food security and agricultural investment in the Kingdom.

Analysts believe his return to corporate boards in a non-executive capacity could enhance strategic coordination without creating conflicts of interest, particularly given similar precedents in Saudi Arabia’s corporate governance landscape.

The move also fuels speculation about broader sector consolidation, including potential partnerships or acquisitions, as Saudi Arabia seeks greater self-sufficiency in key food products under a long-term food security framework.
