Saudi Arabia Moves Toward Airport Privatization and Private Sector Participation
Saudi Arabia is moving forward with airport privatization as part of a broader strategy to enhance infrastructure efficiency and expand private sector participation in key transport assets.
The General Authority of Civil Aviation stated that airport privatization will begin with Abha International Airport, followed by Taif, Qassim, and Hail airports, reflecting the Kingdom’s commitment to public-private partnerships.
Officials noted strong interest from more than 100 companies in the Abha project, with final decisions expected in the coming months, aiming to significantly increase passenger capacity over multiple phases.
The Saudi experience with airport privatization dates back to 2016 with Madinah Airport, which delivered higher capacity and improved service standards, setting a benchmark for future projects.
The initiative aligns with national economic goals to boost private investment, improve passenger experience, and support sustainable growth in the aviation sector.
